2016 Fall Update

9/2/2016

Welcome back students and parents!
It has been a busy start to our new school year and CFS has some exciting news to share with you. Our class has been lucky enough to have 15 new laptops this year in addition to our 15 iPads we had available last year. Students will be using technology A LOT in our class. In fact, my goal is to go paperless when possible, so students will be using Google Classroom to complete and turn in many assignments. You can find more information on Google Classroom and the class syllabus in "Class Resources."
Another new change to CFS this year is that we have moved to Standards Based Instruction, similar to how many core classes are currently grading. Therefore students will not receive average letter grades or percentages as grades any longer. For more information on this you can look in "Class Resources" as well.
If you have any questions or need to contact me please visit the "Contact" page or you can find me on the LEMS website. Here's to a new year!

2016 Spring Update

5/24/2016

This spring was a whirlwind for the Consumer Family Studies students here at LEMS. 7th grade designed and created reusable t-shirt bags after reflecting on the pollution that plastic bags create in the ocean. 8th graders also tackled a textile repurposing project where they gave new life to an old textile product, creating everything from pillows and hats to binder covers and dog clothing!

Next came our Interior Design unit. 7th graders learned about color theory and creating technical floor plans to design their own dream bedroom. 8th graders discussed the housing crisis in Colorado and designed their own "tiny homes" as a solution for unaffordable housing.

Finally 7th grade wrapped up the semester in their Child Development unit, learning about the different ways children develop and the effects of environmental factors on development. Students wrote and illustrated their very own children's books, and then read them aloud to the class. 8th Grade wrapped up with Personal Finance and Career Exploration. After researching the education, skills, and average salary for a career of their choice, students developed a personal budget to see if they could live independently on that salary.

It's been a busy spring and we hope we've all learned some valuable life skills this semester. Mrs. Coil will be in the process of remodeling the current website to make it more "parent-friendly" for the 16-17 school year including more information about the course. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you next year!

Hello readers!

This winter we started class with a whole new group of 7th and 8th Grade students. Students began the semester in their Foods & Nutrition Unit, learning about the macronutrients and healthy food choices. 7th Grade kicked off their cooking experience by making homemade granola bars while 8th Grade started with cheese pizza with made-from-scratch pizza dough. 8th Grade is also working hard on creating our Digital Cookbook page with student-chosen recipes that are appealing to teens. If you have time to check it out, click on the "Digital Cookbook" text on the left side of our website. Both grades will wrap up their units with a final cooking project - 7th Graders are challenged to find snacks with protein and complex carbohydrates that are low in sugar. 8th Graders will be choosing a recipe from their Digital Cookbook to make and review for you. Stay tuned for more!

Real Food

This week in 8th grade CFS we all made Mac and cheese with whole grane elbow pasta. Before we cooked on Thursdayand Friday, we learned about whole food. Whole food (or real food) is the same from farm to table. Meaning there are no artificial flavorings or color. It also doesn't have any GMO's in it. Some foods that are Whole Foods are eggs, milk, coffee, fruits, and vegetables. These are not always whole foods. If there are any artificial flavoring or coloring, they are not whole foods, they are processed foods. Processed foods are the exact opposite of whole foods. After we took notes of whole foods and processed foods, we took that new knowledge and put it to work and made Mac and cheese with ALL whole food ingredients.

CFS creates donations for Humane Society

This week in CFS we were working in our textile design unit. We decided to make items we could donate to our community that we make. First we spent some time brainstorming to come up with ideas of what we could make. We ended up with a lot of different ideas but ended up voting for hats for cancer patients. The next day everyone wanted to re vote so we finally agreed on making supplies for the Greeley animal shelter.
As a class we decided to have each group make the product they wanted so our group chose paracord dog toys. First we measured 48 inches of the paracord then sectioned then of into groups of 4. We folded them in half and zip tied the rope tightly, a little too tight. Then we tied them (after a while because we all got confused) once they all tied (majority of them) we started tying the ends so the toy would not unravel then we burned the edges which was probably the hardest part because we did not wanted it be sharp so it would not hurt anyone.
Other groups did item such as no sew dog beds, t-shirt toys, sweater beds, and paracord dog toys. My favorite ones were the sweater bed because they were affordable easy to make and really comfy (even for me) we donated all the items to the shelter including other donations we accepted from some of the students.

Last week in CFS we worked on our textiles unit. We decided that we would donate our projects to the Weld County Humane society. There were 4 different projects we worked on, the class split up into 4 groups. One group made No Sew Dog beds, anther group made Sweater Cat Beds. Also the 3rd group made T-Shirt Pull Toys, and lastly the 4th group made 3 sided Paracord pull toys. As shown in the recant pictures, we also had people give donations for the cats and dogs at the Humane Society. Our class worked together on this project, for instance we all did our unit packet as a class. As a class we tested our projects by pulling on them, sitting, laying, and ect. If the product broke, ripped, or tarred we would find the cause and fix it. We kept a chart of our findings during the testing period. Over all we created many toys and beds, and collect many donations from our school community. Thank you to all the people who participated in the donations and the projects.

Sewing & Textiles

The past couple of weeks in Consumer Family Studies we started a class project. The unit we are in is textiles and the project we chose to do was make pet beds and pet toys to donate to Weld County Humane Society. The Weld County Humane Society is in need of pet objects, so we decided to make them and donate them. The objects we are making are stuffed dog beds, cat beds made from old sweaters and different types of dog toys. After these are made, we are going to donate it to the humane society. We are also taking donations to donate.

The first project that a group is making is dog beds. These dog beds are made from blankets that are knotted together and stuffing. The group unties some of the knots and stuffs it with stuffing. Then they retire the knots and the beds are done. It's very easy. Another group group is doing cat beds. These cat beds are made from old sweatshirts and stuffing. These are also easy to create.
Two groups are making dog toys but they are made differently. One group is making them out of old t-shirts. The other group is making them out of paracord. These two fun and easy-to-make chewtoys are perfect for dogs to play with. Every group is making as many of their creations as they can to be able to donate. The more that is made, the better the animals will feel to be able to use our donations. The Weld County Humane Society will greatly appreciate it.

In our nutrition unit in Consumer Family Studies class last week, our class learned about how having (nutrition, protein, carbohydrates etc.) in our daily meals it will be good for our health. And also with that we will fulfill our needs for each part of your healthy pyramid. To prove that you can throw in some nutrients in to your favorite meals, my group and I found a recipe that does include your daily needs! To gather more of our knowledge we did packets and fun papers that talk about healthy eating and balanced meals. I’ve learned a lot from those packets and assignments. In the middle of the week my group and I researched recipes that have our daily needs such as (protein, fats, grains, fruits etc.) Soon we found a recipe that worked, which was “Mini Apple Pies”, we made a list of what ingredients we need to buy and how to make to recipe reduce any fats or change them into something else healthy.

After we found our delicious dessert we went right to our kitchens to make the apple pies. The end result was amazing it tasted just like an apple pie but the secret is, it’s healthy!

Tiny House Conclusion

By Kaylee

Last week in CFS we finished up our tiny house project. The house had to be 400 sq ft or less.To test our designs we taped one room on the tile to see if it was comfortable and functional. We learned that some rooms don't have enough space to walk around with the couches, side tables, and cabinets take up to much space. Also, we did not have enough storage. So we had to collaborate with our group members about how and where to put more storage.

The students of CFS have been designing tiny houses. But not just tiny homes tiny homes on wheels. They have been planning, thinking, and looking up ways to help them. This is a challenge since they have to make them under 400ft squared. They have spent every single class day creating there house. But they don’t show any signs of stress these kids are amazing. This has been random reporter signing out.
